About PFAS & Water Contamination
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are a group of man-made chemicals that have been manufactured and used in a variety of industries around the world since the 1940s. These chemicals are persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don’t break down and can accumulate over time.
Common sources of PFAS include:
- Fire-fighting foams (particularly at airports, military bases, and training facilities)
- Water-resistant and stain-resistant coatings for fabrics and carpets
- Food packaging materials
- Non-stick cookware manufacturing
- Industrial facilities that produced or used PFAS
Why Be Concerned?
PFAS chemicals have been linked to a variety of health effects, including increased cholesterol levels, changes in liver enzymes, increased risk of high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, decreases in infant birth weights, and increased risk of kidney or testicular cancer.
In addition to PFAS, Australian water supplies can be affected by other contaminants, including lead from aging pipes, microplastics, naturally occurring heavy metals, agricultural runoff and seasonal algal blooms.
